NOTES:  These were the first ever real-time BPI college football rankings, before the advent of the website.  Only the top 25 teams in the nation were ranked, and these final rankings were processed before the bowl games, thus win-loss records and point totals reflect the final regular season numbers.  Games versus non-Division 1-A competition were included.  The AP and Coaches' polls played major roles in this BPI format, along with strength of schedule and a top 10 win category, similar to the BCS format of the time.

PLAYOFFS:  The BPI 8-team playoff format was born in 2003 as well, and was a pre-cursor to the current system.  The 2003 playoff matchups would have been as follows:

FIESTA- #1 USC v. #8 Florida State

OUTBACK- #4 Michigan v. #5 Texas

COTTON- #2 LSU v. #7 Tennessee

CAPITAL ONE- #3 Oklahoma v. #6 Ohio State

The 1/8 v. 4/5 winner would play in the Orange Bowl while the 2/7 v. 3/6 winner would play in the Rose Bowl, both semi-final contests.  The winners of the Orange and Rose Bowls would play for the BPI National Championship at the Sugar Bowl.
